DEMOCRACY AT WORK

As of the time this is written, the outcome of the Presidential election has not yet been determined.  However, it’s important to remember one thing--regardless of who is the President and which party controls the House of Representatives and the Senate, we will still have a country.

If the people decide that they made a mistake in this election, they’ll have the chance to start changing direction in two years.  But no matter how this election turns out, never forget that we still have a country where the people, not government elites, are in charge.  It is still we the voters who decide the makeup of Congress and who holds the Presidency.

In 1864, Abraham Lincoln was running against George McClellan. McClellan favored a negotiated peace with the South that would allow the southern states to have their own country.  Lincoln favored continuing the war until the country was again united.

The newspapers, the only media of the time, often “embellished” stories in order to win support for the side they favored.  Many urged Lincoln to delay the election until the following year because, until Sherman captured Atlanta, he was almost certainly going to lose.

After the election, which he won, Lincoln appeared on a White House balcony to address a group that had gathered to congratulate him.

Lincoln explained why it was so important to have the election:

We can not have free government without elections; and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us. The strife of the election is but human-nature practically applied to the facts of the case. What has occurred in this case, must ever recur in similar cases. Human-nature will not change. In any future great national trial, compared with the men of this, we shall have as weak, and as strong; as silly and as wise; as bad and good. Let us, therefore, study the incidents of this, as philosophy to learn wisdom from, and none of them as wrongs to be revenged.
But the election, along with its incidental, and undesirable strife, has done good too. It has demonstrated that a people's government can sustain a national election, in the midst of a great civil war. Until now it has not been known to the world that this was a possibility. It shows that, even among candidates of the same party, he who is most devoted to the Union, and most opposed to treason, can receive most of the people's votes. It shows also, to the extent yet known, that we have more men now, than we had when the war began. Gold is good in its place; but living, brave, patriotic men, are better than gold.

Winston Churchill was the British Prime Minister during World War II.  There was pressure on him to postpone or cancel elections, but in the House of Commons in December of 1944, Churchill said:

How is that word “democracy” to be interpreted? My idea of it is that the plain, humble, common man, just the ordinary man who keeps a wife and family, who goes off to fight for his country when it is in trouble, goes to the poll at the appropriate time, and puts his cross on the ballot paper showing the candidate he wishes to be elected to Parliament—that he is the foundation of democracy. And it is also essential to this foundation that this man or woman should do this without fear, and without any form of intimidation or victimization. He marks his ballot paper in strict secrecy, and then elected representatives and together decide what government, or even in times of stress, what form of government they wish to have in their country. If that is democracy, I salute it. I espouse it. I would work for it.”

CONCLUSION

There is an old joke that applies to many politicians who decide that they, once elected, are suddenly transformed into all-knowing people who know better than we ordinary people do what is best.

“What is the difference between God and a politician?  God doesn’t think he is a politician.”

Regardless of who is President and who controls Congress, the fact remains that the corrupt income/payroll tax system is ruining our economy.  It is destroying jobs and keeping a veil over the eyes of our citizens by hiding the amount of federal taxes we pay.  The FAIRtax, by putting the tax rate on every retail receipt, ensures that each American knows exactly how much the Federal government is costing him or her.  This includes the cost of every “free” benefit the politicians dangle in front of us as they try to curry favor and votes.

We must remember that the one thing that any government needs is revenue from its citizens.  As our income/payroll tax system becomes more complicated and more corrupt, the people are starting to rebel.  The billions of dollars in tax evasion that takes place every year is clear evidence that a lot of people consider the system to be unjust and unfair.  Consequently, they feel perfectly justified in fighting back against it.

The FAIRtax makes government more accountable and more transparent—something politicians hate.

If you have friends who don’t know about the FAIRtax send them to FAIRtax.org.  Have them watch the white boards under “How It Works” and, if they agree, ask them to please join us.

Then contact your Members of Congress and the President and demand that Congress pass -the FAIRtax—the only fair tax.

Remember, if we don't continue to tell the truth and demand a change, then this quote from George Orwell's 1984 may foretell our children's future:

“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.”

Is it hopeless?  When confronted with a seemingly impossible problem, remember the statement attributed to the author George Bernard Shaw who wrote, You see things; and you say “Why?”  But I dream things that never were; and I say “Why not?”

Isn’t it time for us to ask, “Why not?”
Thank you for staying FAIRtax strong!
